How to Make a Mango Margarita

Mango Margaritas lend a tropical twist to the traditional frozen margarita. Most mango margarita mix combines the tastes of mango, lime, and tequila with a dash of triple sec to create an adult style mango smoothie. A mango margarita topped with a mint sprig and whipped cream lends the colors of Mexico to this traditional drink, making it the perfect margarita to drink on Cinco de Mayo!
The most common ingredients needed when making a Mango Margarita are as follows:
  • 2 ounces Tequila
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec
  • 1 1/2 ounces fresh lime juice (optional)
  • 3/4 ounce simple syrup (optional)
  • 1/2 cup ripe mango, cut into 1 inch cubes and frozen
  • 2 cups of ice cubes or 1 cup of crushed ice
  • Mint and whipped cream for garnish, if desired

There are many ways to make a margarita, not all margaritas need to have crushed ice or even be made in a blender. However, when making a large amount of the drinks a blender is said to be a good idea. Some options for additional equipment are:
  • Blender
  • Margarita Glass with sugared rim
  • Basic tall glass
  • Stir stick
  • Small masher

Step 1: Cutting up the Mango

Surprisingly enough if the Mango is cut a certain way it allows this drink to be made a lot easier. There are many ways to cut mangoes, however it is wise to steer clear of the seed in the middle. The most effective way to cut the mangoes for this particular drink is to start off by cutting it into thirds. This is also called cutting the two cheeks off, leaving the middle part. The next step in cutting the mango is to grab one of the cheeks and place it in the palm of the hand. The mango flesh should be facing up, take a knife and lightly cut lines horizontally, and then vertically making the mango flesh look like a checkerboard. Make sure to not cut all the way through the mango, and be careful with the sharp knife. Once the checkerboard is complete, use the thumbs to flip the mango inside out, it should now look like a bunch of little squares hanging off of the mango skin. Next take the knife and skim across the mango skin, cutting off the little squares a few at a time. This is one of the ways a mango can be prepared for a margarita; this technique has shown to be quite helpful when it comes to mashing the fruit down.

Step 2: How to make a mango margarita without a blender

Since mango margaritas can be made in a tall glass, or in a blender, this next step can go one of two ways. For this particular step the margarita will be made in a tall glass without a blender. First, grab a clean tall glass and dump the square mango chunks into the glass. Now grab a small masher that fits inside the glass and spend a good minute mashing the mango down as much as possible, till the fruit is finely shredded. Once that has been done fill the glass up with ice cubes, or crushed ice, whichever is preferred. After the mango and ice is in the glass add about 2 ounces of Jose Cuervo, about a half ounce of triple sec can also be added, but is not required when making a margarita, just preferred by some, and lastly add about four ounces of Jose Cuervo Margarita Mix. Next grab a long stir stick, or a special stirring spoon, whichever is easiest to grab, and give it a quick stir. Make sure to get the stirring device to the bottom of the glass in order to make sure the mango mixes well with the rest of the drinks contents. After a good 30 seconds or so of stirring the drink is done, enjoy.

Step 3: How to make a mango margarita with a blender

Similar rules apply when using a blender when making a margarita. It is suggested to use a blender when making a large amount go margaritas for friends and family, during a party or get together. It’s considered to be quite a bit quicker than doing it by hand as well. The same process can be used when cutting up chunks of mangoes; however it isn’t necessary when using a blender. The key when making margaritas is building up the ingredients. This step will be for making one margarita, so double the ingredients and so on when making for more individuals. Start off by dumping the Mangoes into the blender, the blender can be turned on at this point to chop up the mangoes, but isn’t necessary at this point. Add roughly 8-10 ice cubs, or the equivalent in crushed ice. Next add two ounces of Jose Cuervo, and then add half an ounce of triple sec if desired. Next add about four ounces of Jose Cuervo Margarita Mix and blend. Blend until the desired drink texture is reached, make sure the mangoes are shredded up and evenly distributed within the drink. Pour into a glass and serve.
